Welcome

Welcome to the Stephens Chapter DAR website

The Stephens Chapter DAR was founded in 1904 in Decatur, Alabama, by Ellen Stephens Hildreth.  The chapter is named for John Stephens (1763-1842), who enlisted in 1777 in the Virginia militia and served during the entire Revolutionary War.

We are a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

We actively volunteer in the local community, offering our support to veteran patients, schools, teachers, students, and many more.

Our chapter meets regularly in Decatur, with members from the surrounding area including Decatur, Courtland, Moulton, Town Creek, Athens, Huntsville and Mooresville, Alabama.  Our meetings feature guest speakers on a variety of subjects, including American history, patriotism, education, women in history, and women’s issues.

As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the country, the DAR boasts over 165,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally.  Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.
